Week of December 15 -19, 2014

Wednesday HW
1.  Math Data Management quiz on unit 5, Lessons 1 to 3 on Friday, December 19.
2.  MMS HW book lesson 5.3.  We checked 5.2 in class today and nine students were not ready with it out of 23 who were checked.  We are spending considerable time in class introducing the vocabulary and methods for success on the quizzes.
3.  Food and Toy Drive items.  Thank you for your generosity.
4.  Class party on Thursday afternoon in concert with Mr. Beach's class. Please discuss with your child what he/she feels comfortable contributing, if at all.
5.  Friday afternoon will be a "Catch-up and Relish" session for the 2 afternoon periods.  Students must submit the Human Organ Systems booklet for evaluation that day or use the catch-up to do so.  If they are done there is some relish time and I have told students they can bring an electronic item for that time if they wish.  It isn't my intention to deny students 'free time', but if they need the two periods to finish up, that is what may happen.  It is will be good to clear the deck before the 2 week break without anything hanging around to finish.  other than book report reading I will not assign any holiday work.

Week of November 24 - 28, 2014

Friday HW
1.  Our Warren Park trip takes place next week on Thursday, December 4, within the school day.
2.  We began work on our human body illness research project today.  I suggested to students that they pair up with a research buddy to share ideas if they are doing a similar topic, but the students will each produce a personal report and be evaluated individually.

Wednesday HW
1.  Warren Park trip form and fee.  The trip is on December 4.
2.  Select a human illness that you would be interested in researching for our final Human Body activity of the unit.  Some suggestions and the expected structure are in the booklet on page 22.  We are only at the topic selection stage.  Research will continue in class on Friday.  Some research is expected to be done at home through a Public Library visit or internet search.  Today we finished information gathering on the invention affecting a human body system.  We will be writing a judgement on it next class.

For absent students:

  • Morning -- we started Lesson 5 in Geometry unit:  drawing triangles with a ruler and protractor.  Practice was on pages 92, #1.  We spent time reinforcing the use of a sketch as a first step before using the precise tools.  This is a natural progression to the emphasis on estimation that occurred in earlier units this year, with the addition of using "benchmark" angles (90 degrees, 45 degrees) that we confirm visually to help create and confirm guesses.
  • Morning - we introduced the reading goals for the novel studies for each group.  Students have 7 days to reach each page amount, which can de done in Language classes, at DEAR times and at recess.  The novels will not be sent home due to concerns over loss and damage.
  • The afternoon was spent with the computer cart.
N.B.: Absent students should expect to spend at least one recess indoors the next day to catch up.

Tuesday HW
1.  Warren Park trip form and fee.  The trip is on December 4.
2.  Journal:  "Compare your memory of the "If I Can" motivational speaker we listened to in the Library last week to Auggie's experiences in the novel "Wonder" that we are reading as a class read-aloud.
3.  Select a human illness that you would be interested in researching for our final Human Body activity of the unit.  Some suggestions and the expected structure are in the booklet on page 22.  We are only at the topic selection stage.  Research will be beginning in class on Wednesday and Friday.  Some research is expected to be done at home through a Public Library visit or internet search.

Monday HW:
1.  Warren Park trip form and fee.  The trip is on December 4.
2.  Geometry Quiz tomorrow on Unit 3, Lessons 1,2 and 4.
3.  We worked on MMS HW lesson 3.4 today in class.  It would be a good way to study for the quiz.
Last week five students stayed for HW club after school. Today four students stayed.  we worked on Math, Spelling and board practice on Multiplication and Long Division.

Monday, November 17, 2014

Week of November 17 - 21, 2014

Wednesday HW
1.  Geometry Quiz on Unit 3, Lessons 1,2 and 4 on Monday, November 24.
2.  Novel Study book cover due tomorrow.  The students have had three class times to work on it and each group received direction and modeling.  White, undeveloped spaces should be minimal.
3.  Geometry set is recommended for purchase for home use and in class.  I can provide materials but these are limited in supply and condition.
4.  Warren Park trip on December 4, all day.  The forms were handed out today.  Please return them with a completed permission form (yes or no) and the fee of $7.50 (cash, exact change please) if your child is attending.  I would like three parent volunteers if possible.

Tuesday HW
1.  MMS HW book, Unit 3, Lesson 2.  We spent a fair amount of time modeling the protractor use and practicing with it. Parents should consider the purchase of a small Math set (compass, short ruler, triangular rulers -- all transparent).
2.  Winter is here.  Students should have a pair of indoor shoes at school each day.  We use the carpet regularly and wet boots do not help maintain comfortable seating.  Thank you for your assistance.
3.  Spelling Text -- page 15 # 1 and 2.
4.  Warren Park trip on December 4, all day.  The forms were handed out today.  Please return them with a completed permission form (yes or no) and the fee of $7.50 (cash, exact change please) if your child is attending.  I would like three parent volunteers if possible.

Monday HW
1.  MMS HW book, Unit 3, Lesson 1.  We have introduced vocabulary (equilateral, isosceles, scalene, polygon, a variety of polygon names, hatch marks) for three Math periods to start this unit on the right foot.
2.  Parents should consider the purchase of a small Math set (compass, short ruler, triangular rulers -- all transparent) for our Geometry unit.  I can provide the materials, but they tend not to be clear and are often scuffed up.
3.  Winter is here.  Students should have a pair of indoor shoes at school each day.  We use the carpet regularly and wet boots do not help maintain comfortable seating.  Thank you for your assistance.
4.  Spelling Text -- page 13 # 1, 3, and 4; page 14 # 5,6,8, and 9.   Although this appears to be many questions for one evening, students had a 45 minute period to start it.  If your child has not started, this may seem to be a heavy workload.  This was independent work while I monitored small reading groups at the carpet over the previous four school days.

Monday, November 10, 2014

Week of November 10 - 14, 2014

Tuesday HW
1.  Library period tomorrow.
2.  Photo retakes are tomorrow in the North gym.  We will be summoned by a runner.
As I mentioned in yesterday's blog, my guess was confirmed about retakes: "Students who will be retaking their photos should have their proof with them to hand to the photographer."
3.  Book Report reading.  The next report is due on December 10.

Monday HW
1.  Reports went home today.  Please review your interview time and return the envelope with your signature on it.  The report itself is yours to retain. Friday is a PA day, with interviews in the morning, so there is no school for the children that day.
2.  Book Report reading.  The next report is due on December 10.
3.  Picture retakes are on November 12.
(In the past, students were asked to return the unused proof to the photographer when the retake was done for recording keeping.  This hasn't been asked of us this year and may not be a required step.  I haven't received a definitive answer about this so that is the best information I have to offer.)

Tuesday, November 4, 2014

Week of November 3 - 7, 2014

Friday HW
1.  Show interview confirmations.  There was a lot of demand for a couple of time periods.  I did my best to get parents as close to their preferred times as possible.  Interviews are 10 or 15 minutes based on progress.
2.  Candy wrappers for Green Team portrait.
3.  Photo orders returned.  Retakes on November 12.

Thursday HW
1.  Interview request forms were distributed Tuesday.  24 have been returned.  Slots are filling up. Please return your request as soon as possible.
2.  Photo proofs were returned Tuesday.  5 were returned.  At this time, retakes are scheduled for November 12, which could change.  I will update if it does.
3.  For Science:  think of an invention that affects the human body, such as the Fitbit, the Zag shoe or tanning beds.  Have at least three possible topics you could investigate.

Wednesday HW
1.  Quiz tomorrow on Patterning, Unit 1 Lessons 3 and 4.
2.  Return signed and corrected test packs by Thursday, November 6.
3.  Interview request forms were distributed yesterday.  14 have been returned.  Slots are filling up. Please return your request as soon as possible.

Week of October 27 - 31, 2014

Friday HW
Happy Halloween!  The students brought many treats today and we enjoyed a good afternoon.  They were quite calm and showed good manners during the snack time.  The costumes were terrific!  I hope everyone has a safe evening.
1.  I handed out a test pack composed mainly of Math assessments today.  Please review my note on the top of the package.  The return date is next Thursday, November 6, with a parent signature.  (No HSP students received a test pack today.)

Thursday HW
1.  Party snacks, movie and Halloween parade on Friday. Students were discouraged from bring bottles of soda pop so that spills could be prevented.  There are no food allergies that require the use of an epi-pen in our class, but I would still appreciate some care in avoiding treats with those ingredients if possible.

Wednesday HW
1.  Math Patterning quiz on Unit 1, Lessons 1 and 2 tomorrow.  Study the Quick Review sections of the MMS duotang and the Connect sections of the text in the relevant lessons for review.
2.  Party snacks, movie and Halloween parade on Friday. Students were discouraged from bring bottles of soda pop so that spills could be prevented.  There are no food allergies that require the use of an epi-pen in our class, but I would still appreciate some care in avoiding treats with those ingredients if possible.

Tuesday HW
1.  Math Patterning quiz on Unit 1, Lessons 1 and 2 on Thursday, October 30.
3.  Library tomorrow -- bring your Library books for book exchange.

Monday HW:
1.  MMS Lesson 3 in HW book.
2.  Journal -- one page on this prompt:  "Write about a time when you felt uncomfortable about sticking out."  The topic is based on our class read-aloud "Wonder".  Students should pay attention to the sticker guidelines on the inside cover of the journal, as well as any previous correction I made on the first journal.
3.  Party snacks, movie and Halloween parade on Friday. Students were discouraged from bring bottles of soda pop so that spills could be prevented.

Our first homework club was not well attended today, in part due to the announcement of it only last Friday.  I will continue to have them every Monday.  Exceptions would be on days when I am absent due to illness (which would be last moment notice, unfortunately) and on holiday Mondays.  On rare occasions there are school meetings on Mondays.

Monday, October 20, 2014

Week of October 20 - 24, 2014

Friday
1.  My homework club begins on Mondays after school starting on October 27, now that Slow Pitch season is over.  Students are invited to stay after school until 4:00 PM to ask questions, do homework and use class resources.  Students should ensure that their parents and RAC know they are staying and that they leave in a timely manner while the crossing guard is still present and on duty.

Wednesday HW
1.  I did not assign homework this evening.  There will be a substitute in class for me on Thursday while I coach at a Slow Pitch Tournament.  Photo Day is Friday.

Tuesday HW
1.  Select a new book for your book report for next Monday.  The report is not due on Monday.  You should have the book in class to read on Monday.
2.  Locate one website that discusses the risks of smoking.  Make five notes about what you read on a piece of paper.  Things to look for include health risks, money costs and influences to avoid smoking.

Monday HW
1.  Select a book for your next book report.
2.  MMS new duo-tang for Unit 1:  complete Lesson 1, both pages.

Tuesday, October 14, 2014

October 14 - 17, 2014

Friday HW
1.  Scholastic orders due Monday.  No cash please.
2.  Choose a six letter word for your password for school computers on the TDSB network.  An example of a six letter word:  "canuck", "fluffy", or "monkey".  You should choose a unique word that isn't one of these, and not tell your friends your password.

Thursday HW
1.  Quiz on multiplication and division on Friday, October 17.  I handed out a practice sheet to each student who was present personally today.  Please use it to help study.  You may want to do a portion of it each night.  Return it in whatever state it is in on the morning of the quiz.
2.  Scholastic orders are due on Monday October 20.  Cheques only please, payable to Scholastic Canada.
3.  Photo Day is next Friday October 24.
4.  A schedule for the five day cycle was handed out today.

Wednesday HW
1.  Quiz on multiplication and division on Friday, October 17.  I handed out a practice sheet to each student who was present personally today.  Please use it to help study.  You may want to do a portion of it each night.  Return it in whatever state it is in on the morning of the quiz.
2.  Book Report due on Thursday, October 16.  Please bring it it in on the due date rather than earlier.
3.  Scholastic orders are due on Monday October 20.  Cheques only please, payable to Scholastic Canada.

Tuesday HW
1.  MMS HW book page 33.  I have a practice sheet to send home for multiplication and division tomorrow.
2.  Quiz on multiplication and division on Friday October 17.
3.  Book Report due on Thursday October 16.  Please bring it it in on the due date rather than earlier.  Thank you.
4.  Tomorrow is a Library Period day in the afternoon.  Please return your books to exchange them for new ones.  This is a good opportunity to select a chapter book for DEAR time reading or your next book report.  Too often students have no book to read and we have to select one from my class library instead.  Comic books and graphic novels aren't a good substitute in every such case for reading improvement.  I am encouraging students to select personal interest books that present more of a challenge.

Monday, October 6, 2014

Week of October 6 - 10, 2014

Thursday HW
1.  MMS Lesson 12 page 32 only.  We modeled five long division questions on the white board today that showed a progression of difficulty.  We also took some time to practice division estimation before we started.  I am skipping that lesson (#11), for the most part, in the text although we may do some elements of it.
2.  "Honesty" news journal -- summary only.
3.  Book Report is due on Thursday October 16.

Wednesday HW
1.  News Journal on Piper the goose chasing border collie -- complete the summary and the opinion.  Notes about how to do it are on the inside cover of the notebook.  We spent 20 minutes working on it today after a 40 minute introduction to the article and the assignment.
2.  MMS page 28 only.  we started this in class today.
3.  Book Report is due on Thursday October 16.  Please bring it in on that day instead of earlier.

Tuesday HW
Today was a no homework day as part of our Terry Fox fundraising rewards.

Monday HW
1.  Get the Book Report package signed by a parent and returned to class tomorrow.
2.  Select a book report style from the list of 24 possibilities.  It was handed out today and we reviewed samples of almost every type.  The due date is Thursday, October 16.  We have had book report reading time almost daily for the last three weeks and I have asked that reading be done nightly.  Most students should be finished reading their chosen novels.  If your child did not bring it home, the package is downloadable/viewable here:
http://areynolds.org/index_files/Page879.htm
Remember that it is a response to literature, not a summary.  The expected length is about one page.
3.  MMS Lesson 9, pages 26-27.

Monday, September 29, 2014

Week of September 29 - October 3, 2014

I have attempted to address the "Subscribe" issue on this blog.  There is an RSS chiclet at the top of the page (the orange tab with radar waves) that would allow you to subscribe via "My Yahoo" or "netvibes".  The "atom" option seems to produce a page of html code with which I don't know what to do, so I would disregard that choice.  I removed that Atom line from the bottom of the blog but it still shows up here.  Let me know via the agenda if there are further problems and I'll keep looking for other adjustments.  Thank you.

Friday Notes:
1.  Congratulations to the Cross Country runners in room 365 today for their race effort.  Way to go!
2.  Our class will have its first Terry Fox fundraising reward on Monday:  Gum day and Hat day.  The second event will take place on Tuesday:  a free period during period 6.
3.  Our book report package will be handed out on Monday.  The due date is October 16.  If you want an early look, the package is downloadable/viewable here:

http://areynolds.org/index_files/Page879.htm

I will have a printed copy available on Monday.  Remember that it is a response to literature, not a summary.  The expected length is about one page.
Have a good weekend!

Thursday HW
1.  Math Quiz #2 on Subtraction and Multiplication on Friday October 3.  Study resources include the MMS homework book (Quick Review and practice sections) and the text book ("Connect" sections from the relevant lessons: lessons 5,6,7,8).
2.  Ensure that you have a DEAR time book in class each day.  About a quarter of the class are making a daily visit to my book spinner to select a book each session.  As a result, they do not form any connection with the text over time.  It would be better to select one that they can spend a while with, as those books are usually a bit more of a challenge than a comic book.
3.  Finish up "information" notes in your "A Person I Admire" planner.

Wednesday HW
1.  Bike Rodeo tomorrow.  Bring a helmet and a lock.
2.  MMS page 24 only.
3.  Math Quiz #2 on Subtraction and Multiplication on Friday October 3.  Study resources include the MMS homework book (Quick Review and practice sections) and the text book ("Connect" sections from the relevant lessons: lessons 5,6,7,8).
4. Finish up "information" notes in your "A Person I Admire" planner.

Tuesday HW
1.  Complete three questions for each block of the "People I Admire" question planner (W5H: who, what, where, when, why, how).  We worked on this for about 45 minutes in class with examples using Terry Fox and Superman.  The focus was on developing good questions using the Q-Chart on display in class so that students would discover meaningful details to write a profile of an admirable person.
2.  Math Quiz #2 on Subtraction and Multiplication on Friday October 3.  Study resources include the MMS homework book (Quick Review and practice sections) and the text book ("Connect" sections from the relevant lessons: lessons 5,6,7,8).
3.  The Bike Rodeo for our class takes place on Thursday, October 2 from 9 AM to 10:30 AM in the Runnymede Yard with Officer Berridge supervising.  Students who plan to participate should bring their bikes to school that morning together with a lock and properly fitted helmet.  Please inform me of your plan to participate or not to participate.

Monday HW
2.  MMS HW book pages 22-23.
3.  Math quiz tomorrow on Addition (estimation and exact calculation).  Students should be familiar with exact calculations in addition as well as estimation using:
  • Rounding to the nearest 100;
  • "Front End" estimation;
  • Compensation;
  • Adding on.
These techniques are explained in the Quick Review portion of the relevant lessons in the MMS Homework duo-tangs, and also in the Connect sections of those same lessons in the textbook.  We have charted these methods in class and taken care to show the difference between Exact Calculations and Estimation.  These measures are related but cannot be used interchangeably for responses on the quiz.  Students should read everything carefully in the instruction section to know which form to use.

Monday, September 22, 2014

Week of September 22 - 27, 2014

Please note:
I have updated my webpage.  Some students thought there was a field trip on Thursday this week.  The date on that notice was 2013.

There is no scheduled trip to the Legislature as yet.

Friday HW
I want to sincerely thank the families in room 365 for their unbelievable generosity in donating to the Terry Fox Run.  Our class total, which may still rise, was $1723.00.  That number, which includes funds in hand as well as online, is about four times greater than any previous year for my group.  Several extended families donated quite large sums, but all donations are gratefully accepted and celebrated in the spirit of Terry's statement that "even if you give a dollar, you are part of the Marathon of Hope".  Please accept the gratitude of our school's run committee.

1.  We have a Math Quiz on addition, and addition estimation, on Tuesday September 30.  Students should be familiar with exact calculations in addition as well as estimation using:

  • Rounding to the nearest 100;
  • "Front End" estimation;
  • Compensation.

2.  Students should have chosen a figure to write about by Monday for the "A Person I Admire" biography.  No written work needs to be done yet -- only a topic selected.
3.  Book report reading is ongoing.

Thursday HW
1.  Terry Fox donations.  We are collecting until Monday.  We had great spirit shown today.
2.  Choose a person by Monday to write your report about.  We start working on the report on Monday.
3.  Spelling text book work:  page 10, # 4,6,7 and page 11 # 1,2,3,4..  For number 1, we used images in the Science Human Body text book, which had annotated diagrams.  With adult supervision, a web image would also suffice.

Wednesday HW
1.  Terry Fox donations.  We are collecting until Monday.  We had great spirit shown today.
2.  Choose a person by Monday to write your report about.  We start working on the report on Monday.
3.  Spelling text book work:  page 9, # 1,2,3 and "Try This".  For number 1, use the personal word up list of fifteen words, rather than the word box words on page 8.  The inside cover of the spelling notebook outlines what a "personal word up list" is.  Every student has one.

Tuesday HW
1.  Terry Fox donations.  Run is tomorrow.  Wear Red!
2.  MMS p.19.  We started this in class already.
3.  MMS HW pp. 20-21.
4.  Choose a person by Monday to write your report about.  We start working on the report on Monday.

Monday HW
1.  Terry Fox donations
2.  Spelling:  finish all four lists and the 15 sentences.  Explanations are on the inside cover of the spelling notebook.
3.  Student data verification sheets are due with and without corrections or annotations.  Thanks!

Monday, September 15, 2014

Week of September 15 - 19, 2014

Friday HW
1.  I handed back the Math Number Sense diagnostic quiz our class wrote earlier in the year today.  Students should correct the errors on the reverse side and ask their parents or guardians to sign at the top.  The diagnostic is based on grade 4 outcomes.  We practiced the questions on four practice pages prior to the quiz and the quiz questions were taken directly from these practice sheets.  We conducted extensive corrections in class with corrective feedback and strategies named and modeled.  What I noticed is that times tables control is generally weak and long division steps are similarly uncertain.  We continue to practice these skills on a daily and weekly basis in class.  Some home practice would be a good idea if your child is struggling.  The method I use in class for division is the long division "divide/multiply/subtract/bring down" algorithm, which is the standard technique.  I do model other ways and reinforce the place value concepts at play with base ten blocks.
2.  Terry Fox donations.  Students can bring in toonies, or cash or cheques or use the online donation portal at terryfox.org/SchoolRun/.  Receipts can be processed online or, if complete legible information is provided, at school for donations of $20 or more.  Thank you for your generosity.  The run day is next Wednesday, September 24, rain or shine unless there is thunder and lightning.  Wear red in memory of our dearly departed school friend Alex Shapiro.
3.  Student Registration Verification sheets were distributed Wednesday.  Please check them for accuracy and return that as soon as possible.  I have eleven sets still to collect out of 30.  Make any changes in red please to assure than we have correct contact information in the event of an emergency.  Thank you!
4.  Book report reading.

Thursday HW
1.  Journal completed for tomorrow -- 1 page.  The topic is "How do estimation techniques help me add and subtract mentally?"  Students could write 2 or 3 paragraphs on the page.  We brainstormed vocabulary (guess and check, compensation, rounding, adding on, friendly numbers, front end, place value, compatible numbers, narrowing down) and paragraph topic possibilities (1st:  what is easy/my favourite way of estimating; 2nd: what is harder to do, but still useful; 3rd:  what I still am unsure about using).  We have been discussing and practicing estimation for the previous two weeks while also spending time on math facts practice.

Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year!

Week of September 2-5, 2014

Greetings to the new students in my class for 2014-15.  I'm looking forward to meeting and getting to know all of you during this first week.  We will jump right in to the school year with some ice breaker activities and some Math and Language reviews.  As the first week goes by we will be preparing for the first Math unit in Number Sense and the first Language activities with News Journals and a novel study.  Also upcoming are our preparations for field trips to the Ontario Legislature and Warren Park in December.

As well I will see you soon during Curriculum Night on Thursday September 11.  The exact time is TBA, but usually in the 6:300 to 7:00 PM range.  Watch this space for more news as it shared with staff.

This blog will function as a weekly homework listing and be archived as the week ends.  Be sure to check out my class web page at http://areynolds.org/ all year long.  Plenty of useful stuff is posted, including downloads of class handouts which you should use to replace lost work.  As part of my Eco-Schools effort I am reducing the number of extra photocopies I am producing.  Usually the document can be downloaded and printed by students, using my web page as needed, by students.

At the bottom of this blog page is a calendar for the year.  I have updated it for September and am working on finishing the rest of the year.  I also use the calendar to make note of tests, field trips and other school events.  I urge you to subscribe to the blog posts to receive daily updates of your child's activity.  I do make time each day for agenda writing by the students and you should ask to see that book on a daily basis, but this page is a useful complement to that routine.  I will not be signing agendas each day, but you are welcome to do so and include any notes in it that you would like to have me look over.  Please have your child alert me to the note in the morning.

Friday HW
It is not my practice generally to give homework on Fridays or before holidays.  There may be a few exceptions to this over the course of the year.
1.  I have moved the Math Quiz to Tuesday, September 9.  We had five students absent today and I did not feel we could proceed with a quiz on Monday.  We corrected pages 3.0 and 4.0 in class today.  Students who were absent for corrections can stay in on Monday at recess to correct.  Please hand in the bundle of four practice pages on quiz day.
2.  Paper towel roll and box of Kleenex for classroom shared use.  Thank you!
3.  Bring a photo of yourself that you can cut up for the Future booklet.

Thursday HW
1.  Math Number Sense 3.0 was assigned in class today and should be finished as homework tonight.  Most students will be writing a quiz on Monday based on the four math practice activities I assign this week.
2.  Paper towel roll and Kleenex tissue box for class use.
3.  Forms and agenda fee.
4.  Bring a photo of yourself that you can cut up for the Future booklet.

Khan Academy Video on Multiplication

Wednesday HW
1.  Math Number Sense 2.0.  We corrected the first one in class and spent extra time reviewing long division technique, including the "Dracula Must Suck Blood" mnemonic (divide/multiply/subtract/bring down).  We will continue to practice this method for the rest of the week.  All students are receiving review and reteaching as needed with this operation.  As was the case yesterday, students with an IEP, or who see Ms. Angus on a regular basis should do the EVEN-numbered questions.  If an additional challenge is required, do the remainder of the questions as needed.  Please see the video embedded below for some extra review and support for the long division algorithm.
2.  Correction for the Math Number Sense 1.0 page.  We are having a quiz on Monday based on the four reviews with which we are starting the year.  Students should bring these home on Friday for study.  I am not collecting them until I give the quiz on Monday, when I will collect all four.
3.  Parent Consent forms and Medical forms should be filled out and returned.  This includes the first two pages of the stapled package ("Acknowledgement Form") and pages 8,9 and 10 (the Walking Excursion Form, the Media Release form and the Medical Form). Collecting these forms is a huge job and eats into instructional time considerably.  I would really appreciate the prompt return of the forms so I can move on after a day or two of collection. So far I have collected 18 of 30 form sets.  Thank you!
4.  $6.50 for the agenda.  There is a sticker inside the agenda with the student's number and web addresses for this blog and my web page.  So far I have collected 21 of 30 agenda payments.
5.  Bring a photo of yourself that you can cut up. (photocopy, scan, original -- all are OK).
6.  One box of Kleenex tissues and a roll of paper towel are request for class use from each student.  Thank you for your support.

Khan Academy video on Long Division.  I liked his remarks about learning times tables as a springboard to long division proficiency.
Introduction to long division: Dividing into larger numbers. Introduction to long division without remainders

Tuesday HW
1.  Math Number Sense 1.0.  These are based on exit outcomes from Grade 4.  If your child has an IEP or is in the HSP program I have attempted to reduce the workload in class today, usually by circling questions to be done.  If I have missed your child in some way please use your judgement as a parent to reduce the amount assigned to a manageable level.
3.  $6.50 for the agenda.  There is a sticker inside the agenda with the student's number and web addresses for this blog and my web page.
4.  Bring a photo of yourself that you can cut up. (photocopy, scan, original -- all are OK).
5.  One box of Kleenex tissues and a roll of paper towel are request for class use from each student.  Thank you for your support.

Week of June 2 - 6, 2014

Friday, June 6 is a PA Day and there is no school that day.

2.  Social Studies project presentations tomorrow. About 5 minutes each.  Some may be longer, but no one should read every word they wrote to the class.

Tuesday HW
1.  Social Studies Project is due tomorrow.
2.  Be ready to correct MMS lessons 1,2,and 3 tomorrow.
3.  Probability Unit test on Thursday.  It is a short unit.

Monday, May 26, 2014

Week of May 26 - 30, 2014

Thursday HW
1.  Social Studies project is due on Wednesday June 4.  Students should have at least one of the two organizers complete for tomorrow.  The second one should be finished by Monday.  Good copy work starts on Monday.

Wednesday HW
1.  Patterning Unit 10 test tomorrow.
2.  Probability Unit 11, Lesson 1.  We had ample time to complete this in class both yesterday and today, so this shouldn't interfere with any test preparation.
3.  Social Studies project is due next Wednesday.  We are working on it everyday in class, and have been doing so with the exception of yesterday and today.

Tomorrow we leave for the Stratford trip at 11:20 AM.  We are expected back at 7:00 PM.  Please ensure there is an adult over age 18 present to collect your child when we return.  Students will not be permitted to leave the school unaccompanied at that hour, regardless of the daylight prevailing.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Students are eating their lunches in class from 10:35 to 11:20 tomorrow morning.  They should have a healthy snack and water or a juice box for the ride home, given the lateness of the return trip.  There is no refrigeration, so students should bring items that will not spoil (crackers, fruit, carrots, celery, cucumber, etc.).  Food like chips, popcorn, bags of cookies or other shared treats should not be taken on the trip.  Milk (mostly on the bus) and gum are prohibited on the trip as well.

I am permitting students to bring electronics at their own risk.  No photos of other students should be taken using these devices, nor should texting take place on the bus.  As well, students can bring a small amount of money for the gift shop, pending the approval of their parent group leaders.  Students shouldn't regard a gift shop visit as a "human right".  If the shop is busy, overcrowded or other factors enter the decision, they may not get to visit it.  I have prepared students for this possibility in class today. The primary purpose of the visit is a trip to a world-class theatre event.

Monday HW
1.  MMS Lesson 6, Unit 10
2.  There will be a Unit 10 Patterning test on Thursday May 29 this week.
3.  We have had many class periods to conduct research with books I have gathered and internet resources with our school laptops.  I've made a special effort to ensure that students with IEPs have plenty of computer option access.  We've also conferenced together with each grouping to discuss how to use the organizers I handed out.  The topic is laid out with detail in the Social Studies booklet on page 31.
The project is due in class, on a bristol board sheet I provided, next Wednesday June 4.
No extensions are possible.  Students should ensure that their materials are at school every day this week to best use the clas time provided.

Thursday, May 15, 2014

Week of May 12 - 16, 2014

Thursday HW
1.  MMS Unit 10, lesson 4.
2.  Poetry Log good copy due tomorrow.  We have worked on this in class for four periods.

4.  Home Letter:  "Social Media Fitness"
There will be a presentation for parents and students on May 28 at &PM at Runnymede Junior and Senior PS by Chris Vollum (he has a personal website you can Google).  The topic is awareness of and safe online use of popular social media platforms (facebook, snapchat, instagram, tumblr., vine, etc) with a focus on digital citizenship, privacy online, risk management, and effective positive use of these media applications.

Monday, May 5, 2014

Week of May 5 - 9, 2014

Monday HW
1.  Book report is due on Thursday May 8.
2.  Social Studies topics and partners were chosen Friday.  Research for this project should be on-going.  The textbook has some useful starting points.
3.  All Library books are due back at school on Monday, May 12.

Due to the Seussical and this book report I will not be assigning any formal homework this week.  There are, however, in-class assignments that students should be finishing during the time provided in the day.  I would consider these to be testable materials.  I try to be generous in allotting in-class time to work on these tasks.

Monday, April 28, 2014

Week of April 28 - May 2, 2014

Friday HW Update:
1.  There was plenty of class time today to finish some assignments we've been working on in class (and at home) for some time.  Today was the last class day for The Story of Stuff, the Encounter narrative story, and the "Colour of my Dreams sunglasses perspective assignment.  Any students who haven't finished these can stay in at recesses to do so, or finish them off at home.  Feel free to ask your child if these were handed in today, fully completed.
2.  The Book Report is due next Thursday May 8.  It is not a long report -- minimum one page, maximum two pages of written material -- but should be done well and show effort in the finished product (no pencil, no scribble-style colouring)..

Wednesday HW
1.  The Story of Stuff is due on Friday this week, as announced on Monday.  Students should be working on this final copy at home.  I have not assigned any homework this week, to reflect that.  Here's what students should bring on Friday:

  • a series of typed (or handwritten in pen) pieces of paper for the five paragraphs in the Story sequence which is outlined in the topic sheets in the Changes in Matter booklet on pages 8, 9 and 10,
  • hand-drawn pictures illustrating a key image for each paragraph (no photocopies or clip art -- students may trace or use web images as models, but all work is to be done by hand).

On Friday, we will use the large construction paper sheets to mount each student's work.  We are making a class book, so all the sheets have to be the same size.  DO NOT mount your work at home on another page.  After the layout is settled and glued down, students will make a decorative title and add other flourishes.  There is no time to print or compose work for the project in class on Friday -- only assembly.
2.  McMichael gallery trip form and fee are due Friday.
3.  Book Report is due May 8.
4.  Topic Choice for the Social Studies project outlined on page 31 of the booklet should be ready for Friday, along with the name of a partner (if you wish to work with a partner).

2.  Topic Choice for the Social Studies project outlined on page 31 of the booklet should be ready for Friday, along with the name of a partner (if you wish to work with a partner).
3.  Story of Stuff is due on Friday.  I provided a large presentation sheet today to students, and we looked at models again to identify what made some successful and others a challenge to read and understand.
4.  Book report due on May 8.

Monday HW
1.  Be sure your rough draft for the Encounter story is done.
2.  Topic Choice for the Social Studies project outlined on page 31 of the booklet should be ready for Friday, along with the name of a partner if you wish to work with a partner.

Wednesday HW
Today was the Day of Pink.  Thank you to the students for their efforts to wear pink, especially to the boys in 365 who really took on the challenge.  Bravo class!

Judging by the number and frequency of interpersonal disputes I moderated today, we certainly need to build awareness of the more overt and the more subtle forms of bullying that take place at school each day.  Of particular note is the need to intervene when a student is a bystander.  It is important for students to be able to say "That's wrong.  I don't agree with that.  You're my friend, but I don't think that's right."  Those are powerful words that mean a great deal coming from a peer rather than another talk from an adult.  We will continue to talk about the need to show respect to our class friends in the coming days.

1.  "Alice Through the Looking Glass" play permission forms were handed out today.  This play is presented in Stratford in May, but we need to pay the theatre earlier on.  Forms, and fees if the student is attending, are due April 21.
2.  OISE study permission forms with a YES or a NO are due by April 10.
3.  2 good copies of the Five Sense poems are due in class tomorrow in blue/black ink.  I also asked for the backgrounds to be completed on manila pare as well, which was provided in class during our work period on them today.
4.  Please be able to state your book report topic choice in class on Friday.
5.  We completed a quilting/transformation activity in Art recently.  When I put the work up on the bulletin board, on 20 of 30 were handed in completely.  Students who did not finish the work should consider this homework after four class periods of time.

Tuesday HW
1.  Day of Pink tomorrow for anti-bullying awareness.  Wear pink!
2.  Math Quiz on Unit 8, Lessons 5, 6, and 7 next Wednesday.  A good problem to practice would be page 279, # 10 in the textbook and page 115, #2 in the MMS book.
3.  Return signed OISE research permission letter by April 14.  It seems like a worthwhile endeavour that our principal has endorsed.
4.  Choose your book report topic by Friday.

Monday HW
1.  Story of Stuff research and note-taking is ongoing.
2.  Book report novel is due in class for daily reading.  Several students had no book today.  The actual report is due in May, but time has a way of passing quickly when preparation slides....
3.  Library period is Tuesday morning period 1.  The Spring Thaw caused some shifting of times.
4.  Math Quiz on Unit 8, Lessons 5, 6, and 7 next Wednesday.  A good problem to practice would be page 279, # 10 in the textbook and page 115, #2 in the MMS book.

Week of March 24 - 28, 2014

Thursday HW
1.  MMS pages 112-113 on Lesson 5.  Yesterday's quiz was done very well, based on my marking of page one.
2.  Unit 8, lessons three and four Math Quiz on Tuesday, April 1 (sorry, that's no April Fool...).
3.  Continue gathering research for your "Story of Stuff" project.  I am looking at a due date of April 8.  I do move the due dates at times if unforeseen circumstances arise, but it won't be earlier than that.
A good starting point for is the show page for "How It's Made" on the discovery.ca website.  The Story of Stuff video is easily available online on YouTube if you want a refresher on our introduction to the topic.  This site however doesn't really deal with two of the three main components:  extraction and environmental impact.
4.  Scholastic orders are due in class on Monday.

Wednesday HW
1.  Trickster Tale is due in good copy form on Thursday by 3:15 PM.  Students must hand in the story organizer/planner with it.
2.  Continue gathering research for your "Story of Stuff" project.  We spent another period yesterday for a total of three using laptops to do preliminary research for the organizer in the Science booklet.  At this point much of the assignment will be completed at home, by contrast with the Human Organ Systems assignment, for which I scheduled many in-class periods that were not always used well.

3.  Trickster Tale is due in good copy form on Thursday by 3:15 PM.  Students must hand in the story organizer/planner with it.
4.  Continue gathering research for your "Story of Stuff" project.  We spent a period yesterday and today using laptops to do some preliminary looking online.  We will have one more period for that tomorrow.  A good starting point is the show page for "How It's Made" on the discovery.ca website.  The Story of Stuff video is easily available online on YouTube if you want a refresher on our introduction to the topic.

Monday, March 17, 2014

March 17 - 21, 2014

Friday HW
1.  Get your "Story of Stuff" project topic sheet signed over the weekend for Science.  Remember to have your booklet back in class on Monday.

Thursday HW
There is no homework tonight.

Wednesday HW
1.  MMS Lesson 2, pages 106-07 on Fractions and Mixed Numbers.
2.  Bring Library books for tomorrow's Library book exchange period.

Tuesday HW
1.  There is no homework today.  We had nine students away again.  I am trying to slow the pace somewhat to ensure catch-up is not so onerous.

Please bring Library books back starting tomorrow, in advance of our Wednesday Library period.  The circulation system is running properly again and there will be a backlog if books arrive "just in time" for book exchange.  A day earlier would be better.

For those students who are absent, we introduced the use of Cuisenaire rods for fraction manipulation today, but did not complete lesson 2.  We spent two other periods on our Trickster Tale writing and a further one period following up the tail end of Monday's Science lesson and introducing the second Science lesson.

Monday HW
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
1.  We started a new unit in Fractions today with a double period introduction.  Students exchanged their old MMS homework duo-tangs for new ones for Unit 8.  Tonight's homework is Lesson 1 on Equivalent fractions, pages 104-105.

A number of students were absent today.  I will provide some in-class time at recess for catch-up but that isn't really going to be enough to replicate five class periods.  Students can come to homework club on Monday nights to catch up or make plans to read the material and do these practice activities at home:

  • We covered the equivalent fractions material in the hard cover text on pages 258-260 today in Math.
  • In our Changes in Matter unit we performed the experiments as class demonstrations on pages 4 to 6 of the textbook.
  • We also spent a period working on our Trickster Tale rough drafts, with a focus on counting sentences in each paragraph (five is the minimum), and identifying topic and concluding sentences.
  • In our Social Studies work we answered question on the Thornton and Lucie Blackburn reading for "Flight to Freedom" and we read "Capture and Rescue" aloud.

Week of March 3 - 6, 2014

Reminder:  There is no school on Friday due to an unpaid day for staff.

Tuesday HW
1.  Trickster tale planner sheet should be complete and returned to school tomorrow.  We had 45 minutes in class today to work on composing it.  10 students have still not gotten it signed by a parent.
2.  Geometry quiz tomorrow on Unit 7, lessons 3 and 4.  Today's quiz went fairly well, however I noticed students were reluctant to use skills practiced in class -- specifically the use of tracing paper to test the stated transformations they wrote about and the use of special vocabulary highlighted in the unit study sheet they each received..
3.  Spirit Day -- Beach!! -- on Thursday March 6.
4.  "Carnivale" is also on Thursday March 6.  It is an outdoor event. Students should dress accordingly that day, especially in view of the Beach wear they may have in the morning.

Monday HW
1.  Parent signature on Trickster Tale topic sheet/organizer was requested last week to ensure parents are aware of this upcoming in-class writing assignment.  Only 12 of 25 students returned it with a signature today.  I won't be checking tomorrow, but it is still expected.
2.  Sign and correct measurement test package for tomorrow.
3.  Transformation Geometry quizzes that are upcoming:
a) Unit 7, Lessons 1 and 2 (coordinate systems and transformations) tomorrow.
b) Unit 7, Lessons 3 and 4 (congruent figures and lines of symmetry) on Wednesday, March 5.
If your student is absent due to an early holiday, these are the lessons that should be completed in time for quizzes an day after he or she returns to school.
4.  We've been crafting a response to the Lego letter in class for some time.  Today was our final in-class opportunity to finish a proper good copy in 6 paragraphs.  It is due tomorrow in class.

Monday, February 24, 2014

Week of February 24 - 28, 2014.

Friday HW
1.  Parent signature on Trickster Tale topic sheet/organizer is requested to ensure parents are aware of this upcoming in-class writing assignment.  This is a story that should be done in class and not at home.  We spent a period today modelling how a story organizer works, by looking at one of the trickster tales we read and plotting the components of the story into the organizer.
2.  Sign and correct measurement test package for Tuesday.
3.  Transformation Geometry quizzes that are upcoming:
a) Unit 7, Lessons 1 and 2 (coordinate systems and transformations) on Tuesday, March 4.
b) Unit 7, Lessons 3 and 4 (congruent figures and lines of symmetry) on Wednesday, March 5.
If your student is absent due to an early holiday, these are the lessons that should be completed in time for quizzes an day after he or she returns to school.

Thursday HW
1.  Review for Measurement Unit test (Unit 6, all 10 lessons) on Friday February 28.  Use the hard cover text and duo-tang materials as study aids.  Be sure to bring these back to school each day for Math class.
2.  MMS pages 98-99 (Lesson 3: Congruent Figures).
3.  Please take note of the short timeline for this Geometry Unit.  We end it before the March Break.  Please make time to catch up if you plan to depart for an early holiday.  The lessons covered are specified below.  We are finished up with three of the five lessons as of today.
4.  Test pack -- Measurement quizzes.  Sign and correct and return by Tuesday.  These formative quizzes should help students prepare for their unit test tomorrow.  If the test represents a big improvement I can use it to fill in gaps for grades for this strand.  The first quiz was particularly weak.  I don't think students paid attention to SI Notation rules and lost 6-10 easier marks on the first page.  The class average improved dramatically by the final quiz.
5.  Pizza day lunch tomorrow.
6.  Bring props for your Trickster plays if you wish.  Nothing valuable that you would regret losing or damaging please.
Wednesday HW
1.  Review for Measurement Unit test (Unit 6, all 10 lessons) on Friday February 28.  Use the hard cover text and duo-tang materials as study aids.  Be sure to bring these back to school each day for Math class.
2.  MMS pages 96-97 (Lesson 2: Transformations).
3.  Please take note of the short timeline for this Geometry Unit.  We end it before the March Break.  Please make time to catch up if you plan to depart for an early holiday.  The lessons covered are specified below.

A number of students in class are using computer options for word processing their written work.  Their typing/keyboarding skills could be supported and improved with home practice at the Dance Mat site at BBC Schools. (link embedded)

Tuesday HW
1.  Review for Unit Test:  text book pages 222-23 # 7-12.
2.  Measurement Unit test on Friday, February 28.
3.  MMS Unit Seven (Geometry):  Lesson 1 pages 94-95.
This is a short unit.  There only four lessons left, which will be completed and tested before the March Break.  If your child is missing school for an early holiday, this would be the work we are doing (unit 7, lessons 1,2,3,4 and 6, all questions in the text book and the MMS book).  Your child should be prepared to write any quizzes on the Tuesday after the break.
4.  We broke into groups for a role play activity connected to our reading.  If you child misses a significant amount of the practice and presentation due to illness or early holidays, he/she will be asked to prepare and present another work of my choosing.  Please let me know if this is the case (holidays) in advance.  Thank you.
5.  Tomorrow we will have a Library book exchange period.

Homework Club was attended by seven students on Monday after school.  We worked on "What a Wonderful World" art, and reviewed for Friday's Math unit test, working out some time and speed problems on the whiteboard.

Monday HW
1.  Review for Unit Test:  text book pages 222-23 # 1-6.
2.  Measurement Unit test on Friday, February 28.

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Week of February 18 - 21, 2014

Thursday HW
1.  Math Measurement Quiz on Monday, February 24.  Unit 6, lessons 6,7,8 and 9 (but not 10).
2.  No other homework tonight.
Reading for the love of it produces results according to EQAO survey (follow link).

Wednesday HW
1.  MMS Lesson 9, pages 90-91.  About two-thirds of the class did not complete the homework from last night.  In particular the portion requiring the use of a measuring cup was deemed "not possible" by a fair number of students.  I was surprised to hear students say they did not have a measuring cup at home.  I encourage all the boys and girls to attempt the hands-on activities at home, as they do at school.  These are the sorts of practical problems most students need more repetitions to solve.
2.  A chapter book is a good thing for students to have in class each day for the DEAR times I use.  We go to the library at Runnymede school every two weeks to get books -- most recently last Wednesday.  Too many students are settling for regular use of my Egyptology and Dragonology books, or rereading my graphic novels.  I encourage students to select more age appropriate books that offer more of a challenge and something new to learn about.  I certainly possess books like that on my spinner and would be happy to help a student choose a book.

Tuesday HW
1.  Ensure that MMS lesson 8, pages 88-89 is finished.
2.  The CNIB offers free access to Mp3's of their large collection of audio books (85 000 titles in leisure reading and non-fiction, but no textbooks).  Students can self register with their parents as long as they have a public library card.  This is an ideal resource for students with a learning disability.  Visit the site at
www.cnib.ca/selfregistration to get started.

3.  Math Unit six quiz on Time and Money (Lessons 1 to 5) on Friday, February 14.
4.  Complete the six paragraph, two page journal entry about the Letter to Lego.  Particulars are below.

We looked at a Letter written to LEGO
by Charlotte Benjamin, a seven year old girl.
She wrote it on January 25, 2014.  It is widely available online.
1.  What is the letter about?
2.  Whose point of view is presented?  Describe it.
3.  Whose point of view is missing or would be interesting to hear?
What might this viewpoint say?
4.  Connect:  Do you have any experiences with gendered toys?
Briefly outline the experience.
5.  Respond and evaluate:  Do you agree or disgree with Charlotte?
Give a reason or two for your opinion.
6.  Find Lego's response to her online.
Respond to and evaluate what this company had to say about the concern raised.
2 journal pages.

6.  Find Lego's response to her online.  Make a few notes to summarize it on a piece of paper, or print it at home and highlight the parts you think are important.
(Respond to and evaluate what this company had to say.  This part is done at school in the journal.)
2 journal pages.

Thursday HW
What a terrific assembly today!  The girls in our class who formed the "Flash Mob" were outstanding.  Thank you to Ms. Kenny and the other parents on the Centennial Committee for producing this event.  I look forward to our class work on the murals of the 60's and 70's.
1.  MMS Lesson 5 "Making Change", pages 82-83.
2.  Test packs due tomorrow with parent signature and corrections where possible.
3.  Interview letters were sent home today.  I will be conducting interviews on Thursday night next week, starting at 4:00 PM and ending at 7:30 PM.  I have met with all parents at least once already this year.  If you want to speak with me again, please send in the confirmation sheet as soon as you can.  I try to honour a "first-come, first-served" sequence where possible, while accommodating sibling times as best as I can.

Wednesday HW
1.  No Homework tonight.  Shovel snow?

Test pack is due on Friday, February 7, 2014 with a parent signature and corrections where possible.

Tuesday HW
1.  Test pack due on Friday, February 7, 2014 with a parent signature and corrections where possible.
2.  Storyboard for "Raven Freed The Moon" due tomorrow.  It should be fully coloured and have a clear title at the top.

I have spoken to the class on more than one occasion about safe play this week in the playground.  The ice and snow are seasonal hazards, but there are some judgement errors that are adding to those obstacles.  No parent expects to have his/her child come home with an angry welt on his/her child's face.  Please reinforce with your child the absolute need to keep ice and snow chunks on the ground.  There should be no throwing of ice and snow at recess times, full stop.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Monday HW
1.  MMS pages 80-81.
2.  Test pack due on Friday, February 7, 2014 with parent signature and corrections where applicable.

Monday, January 27, 2014

Week of January 27 - 31, 2014.

Friday HW
1.  Today I handed out a test pack containing some language and math assessments, as well as Science and Social Studies unit marks.  Please review and correct where possible.  Have a parent sign the top page.  Return the package next Friday.

Wednesday HW
1.  Unit 4 Test on Decimals tomorrow.  I checked to ensure that students had the MMS duo-tangs in their bags to study tonight.
2.  Friday is pajama day.

Tuesday HW
1.  Unit 4 Unit test in Math on Decimals is this Thursday, January 30 during periods one and two.  Please do your best to arrive on time for class that day.
2.  Find out some things on the internet about the Scientific Improvement you chose today in Science.  This will complement the computer we had in class today and will have in the coming days.  At a point in the research process the computers will be withdrawn and passed on, so please ensure you are ready for that moment by doing some web surfing tonight.
3.  MMS pages 76-77.  New duo-tangs we passed out today.  Students should hang on to the previous ones until Thursday's test is done.
4.  Friday is pajama day!

Monday HW

2.  Find out some things on the internet about the Scientific Improvement you chose today in Science.  This will complement the computer we had in class today and will have in the coming days.  At a point in the research process the computers will be withdrawn and passed on, so please ensure you are ready for that moment by doing some web surfing tonight when you have very little homework.
.
We started a cycle of Science experiments and short reports today.  Parents who want to know the specifics should take a look at the back of the Human Body booklet for the specific outlines, starting on page 15.  The procedures are in the text books we use and generally have photos to illustrate some steps.
