Today we looked at the surface area of rectangular prisms after we corrected yesterday's MMS homework. We took a note on surface area and worked in small groups to calculate the surface area of typical product boxes (cereal, facial tissue, mac and cheese) while developing a framework for benchmark estimations of these boxes. I spent some time checking in with students who have been scoring below expectations in homework, in some cases making calls home for homework that is not being done. We handed in the Space Free verse poems. We worked on the "Beasts of Never" narrative story. The Math lesson was quite long and we did only two subjects in three periods.
Monday HW
1. MMS pages 140-41
2. Book Report due Thursday
3. Space Free Verse poem due in good copy form tomorrow.
Today we introduced another way of looking at the relationship between the area of triangles and parallelograms. We handed in the Creation myth cartoons. We worked on the "Beasts of Never" poem set and looked at turning the characters introduced in them into characters that meet in a new narrative story. We also spent time in Social Studies on the Vinland Sagas, the Columbus diary, and the Encounter story. We looked at the idea of contact and point of view in these accounts.
