** A reminder that Friday December 20 is an unpaid day and schools will be closed. **
Wednesday HW
1. Book Club reading -- 25 minutes. Students should be prepared to present orally a reading of their favourite part of the novel and lead a discussion about the reasons for choosing that section when we return from the holiday. There is no written portion for this assignment and students should not speak from notes.
2. Food and Toy Drive ends Thursday.
3. We will have a movie afternoon and some light treats that students bring in on Thursday afternoon. There are several students with serious allergies to PEANUTS in the class that require EPI-Pen use. If there are no ingredients listed on the snacks I am afraid that I will not permit them to be opened. Some examples of safe treats include clementine-style oranges, popcorn, tortilla chips, juice boxes, or certain cupcakes that are certified nut-free at grocery stores. Food storage at school is extremely limited, particularly refrigeration. Please do not bring treats that require reheating or refrigeration.
Class events that include food have become a more complex undertaking over the years. I want to indulge the students and their wishes for a party but I really want to ensure and reiterate that the safety of each student is my primary concern. If you do not wish for your child to consume any of these treats I can reconsider the food portion of the activity, or those students could bring their own safe snacks. All the options are open. Please let me know if you have serious reservations. Thank you.
Tuesday HW
We had a terrific Art afternoon thanks to the efforts of Ms. Janine Brownrigg. The students used pastels and watercolours to make a one point perspective and a Robert Indiana-inspired artwork. Thank you very much to Ms. Brownrigg for her generous offer of her time, materials and expertise. Some students brought the art works home on Tuesday. The remaining students will bring their work home on Wednesday.
The end of the day was a bit of a scramble so the blog was not updated in time, but I did ensure that students left with study materials for the Quiz on Wednesday.

Week of December 9 - 13, 2013
Thursday HW
1. MMS pages 70-71. Today's lesson focused on the difference in appearance and function of line graphs as compared to the other styles we've looked at previously (Bar, circle and pictograph). The major difference is that line graphs show changes over time and connections between data items, while bar graphs compare data visually and sort data by category well. We also spent some time introducing the vocabulary terms "axis" and "axes" and discussing the compression mark one can use on the vertical axis scale.
2. Book Club reading -- 25 minutes.
3. Toy and Food Drive items.
4. Library period tomorrow. Please return overdue items or settle accounts for lost books with Mr. Lisi.
Wednesday HW
1. MMS pages 68-69. We walked through a bar graph building activity today. We also introduced the idea of an "interval": a grouping of data into 5 or six equally spaced groups when there are too many data items to graph easily in one graph.
2. Book Club reading: 25 minutes. I am encouraged by the comments from the students (such as "This is the best book ever"; "It's really good"; "I really like it").
3. Toy and food drive items. We have 112 items so far. If each student brought in five items each we would reach our goal of 155 pieces. Thank you very much for your efforts so far!
4. Library period on Friday. Please return overdue items or settle accounts for lost books.
Tuesday HW
We had sixteen students stay for homework Club on Monday night -- a new record!
1. Spelling Text work from today on pages 46 to 49. Specific questions were written on the board.
2. MMS pages 66-67. We discussed the ideas of "Range" and "Balance Point" today in our inquiry into the concepts of Mean and Mode. Students can practice finding averages at home in a variety of ways (list high temperatures for a week and then find the seven day high average) for extra home practice.
3. Toy/Food Drive. We have 103 items and one toy to date. Thank you class!
4. Human Illness research. Students had opportunities in small groups to use the BioDigital human application on the smart board today. These visits will be ongoing. Students are also sorting their information into Inquiry organizers using the questions on the topic sheet as a guide.
5. Students selected novels for Book Club today. The activity involves students reading a novel with a group of peers. We hope to finish the book during DEAR times in class and at home before the Christmas break arrives. After the holiday students will gather in small groups and each will read aloud his/her favourite section. This should be a portion of about a page that really made an impression on him/her. Afterwards the student will discuss why that section was chosen, giving compelling reasons. There is no written work required for this assignment. It is an oral presentation (about five minutes total between reading aloud and talking about it) geared towards students who like to read but who may be reluctant writers. The goal is not to make this a holiday assignment. Students should have plenty of time to read the novel before the holidays start.
Monday HW
1. Test tomorrow on Geometry Unit 3: Triangles, Angles and Polygons.
2. MMS Pages 64-65.
3. Toy/Food drive items. Another 34 items came in today. Well done kids!
4. Information on your Human Illness for the Science report.
Science! MIT researcher devises "toughest" tongue twister ever.
Say this ten times fast: "pad kid poured curd pulled cod".

Week of November 25 - 29, 2013
Thursday HW
1. Library period tomorrow.
2. Pizza day tomorrow.
3. Start to gather research for your human illness project. Parents can read a description of the assignment on page 22 of the booklet, downloadable at this link: http://www.areynolds.org/downloads/human-organ-systems2013.pdf , or read the version in your child's Science booklet.
Today students selected a group of up to three members and chose a unique illness to study. Although they will work as partners in the Inquiry phase of the activity, each member produces his/her own report in his/her own words. Students should take special care not to copy the wording found in information resources they gather. This is a risk that we will discuss as a class and I would appreciate some discussion at home as well.
Students may wish to register for a free BioDigital Human account with parent supervision. We will be using this resource in class on the Interactive Whiteboard as an enrichment feature under my supervision.
You can register for a free account at this site: https://www.biodigitalhuman.com/home/ . There is also an app on iTunes for a hefty fee. The Chrome store has one for free but your computer may be lacking some minimum level requirements in the same way that our school computers are not up to the task
Wednesday HW
1. MMS pages 42-43. A ruler and protractor are required for this homework, which I cannot provide for home use. The topic and technique were introduced in class yesterday. The Quick Review should also provide some useful guidance.
2. Cookies were delivered and distributed today.
3. Library period on Friday Afternoon November 29. Please return all books and look for lost ones. Consider settling your account with Mr. Lisi if you wish to keep taking out new books.
4. Dictation #9 on Monday December 2.
Tuesday HW
1. Spelling Cycle #9 activities to be finished.
2. Cookies tomorrow according to Ms. Dennis.
Monday HW
1. MMS pages 40-41. There is a game on page 41. Try to play it if you can.
We had eight students stay for Homework Club today, which is a typical number over the past four weeks. I announced the event to a quiet, listening class at 3:05 today and outlined the types of things students could work on after school. Those things included:

Any home use should be initiated and monitored by parents, given the natural inquisitiveness students have about human body depictions.

Friday HW
Thank you for the support our school's fundraising cookie sale received from students in our class! According to our Principal's announcement our school raised over $1000 in a very short time. Ms. Dennis also announced that we had to order more cookies to fill all the orders, meaning that some students at our school (I'm not sure which ones) will receive their cookies on Tuesday next week.
1. Spelling Dictation # 8 on Monday. no other homework (text activities were completed in class).
Thursday HW
1. Fundraising cookie sale continues (and ends) tomorrow.
2. French verbs sheet.
Wednesday HW
1. No homework today -- all day field trip.
We had a good day at Warren Park Outdoor Education Centre today, in perfect weather conditions. We made artworks to communicate a message with natural, found materials and filmed the results with iPads. The students made many relevant and thoughtful contributions during our carpet discussions and our conduct was generally appropriate. However I will continue to work on ordinary behaviour skills with the class (lining up to travel, transitions, listening with eye contact and silence, accountable talk) that remain a bit of a barrier to full enjoyment of the trip. Thank you very much to the two parent volunteers, Ms. Hay and Mr. Kurvits, for their support for today's excursion. It is much appreciated.
Tuesday HW
1. Warren Park Trip form and fee. The trip is on Wednesday, November 20 from 9-3. Students should dress for the weather and pack a lunch.
2. A picture for "A Person I Admire" should be in class tomorrow if you do not plan to draw one on your own.
3. Spelling Cycle Activities (Alphabetical Order, Syllabication and Derivatives) for cycle #8. There are many proper nouns in this week's list. Derivatives might be hard to make from those types of words. Try your best, but it you can't do it I will be flexible.
4. Fundraising cookie order sheets for Philippines Typhoon relief were distributed today. Please support this worthy initiative lead by our senior school Student Council
Monday HW
1. Unit 1 Patterning Quiz 2.0 on lessons three and four. The previous quiz had a high class average. This one will be a bit tougher.
2. MMS pages 36-37. Remember that a ruler is a required tool for this geometry unit for in-class work and homework. I handed out a dark blue Unit three duo-tang today. I will collect the light blue one after the Patterning test is done.
3. Rough Draft for "A Person I Admire" should be done for tomorrow. We had another class period to work on this today. Most students are done already.
4. Warren Park Trip form and fee. The trip is on Wednesday, November 20 from 9-3. Students should dress for the weather and pack a lunch.
5. A picture for "A Person I Admire" should be in class tomorrow if you do not plan to draw one on your own.

Week of November 11 - 14, 2013
Thursday HW
1. Return report card envelopes (remove progress report first).
2. Patterning 2.0 quiz on Lessons three and four from Unit 1 on Tuesday, November 19.
3. Word Up Dictation #7 is on Monday November 18.
4. I suggest purchasing a small Math set (compass, protractor, short ruler, triangular ruler) for your child to use in class and at home during this unit we started today. The advantages of such a kit are that they are new and in good condition, without any rounded edges, and that they are transparent and smaller sized. I can provide protractors and large yellow rulers that are fairly well-worn.
5. We are going to Warren park for an all-day field trip on November 20. Forms were handed out today. The cost is $7.50. Parent volunteers are requested -- two or three should be enough.
6. Mr. Lisi in the Library gave our class an urgent reminder about overdue and lost library books. Our class has a high number of such items outstanding. Please check at home for these overdue books or forward payment for a lost book. I have asked for a system-generated list of overdue books to help track them down.
Our class enjoys books and DEAR time and understands that other students may want to read one of the over 700 lost or overdue books our Library is currently trying to track down school-wide. Our class is not responsible for that entire total but we do have a significant contribution to it. We recovered half a dozen just through a desk check after lunch today. It should be easy to respond to Mr. Lisi's request. To assist I have added a stand-alone Library listing in my calendar below. The original listing might have been hard to see. Thank you for your support.

MEA CULPA:
I neglected to hand out the Progress Reports at the end of the day today.
I apologize for the blunder.
We were gearing up for the Homework Club time and it slipped my mind.
Your child did not lose the report, or leave it at school intentionally.
Progress Reports will be handed out tomorrow.
Once again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Week of November 4 - 8, 2013
Thursday HW
1. Problem of the Week on Patterning is due November 11.
2. Person I Admire organizer: Complete the last two blocks for tomorrow and return it to class (Quality 3 and Conclusion). We worked on it in class today and discussed the features of an effective conclusion -- to restate the introduction and qualities and wrap up with a final summary comment without introducing new information.
3. Test pack #2 is due with a parent signature and corrections for Spelling and Math activities on Friday November 8.
4. An Interview Request letter was sent home yesterday. Please select your top two preferences and return the sheet as soon as possible. I am meeting with all parents during this progress report period. 20 students out of 31 have returned the form to date and spaces are filling up.
5. Word Up Spelling Dictation #6 is tomorrow.

3. Spelling Text work on page 25 # 3 and 4; page 26 # 5,6, and 8; and page 27 # 1.
4. Test pack #2 was handed out today. It is due with corrections to the spelling activities only.
5. Find out information about the person you admire so you can write during our class rough draft times.
6. MMS pages 6 and 7.
We have been working for two days on the idea that students can use a pattern rule to predict a future outcome without have to perform every single result in the output column of a given T-chart. This is an extension of the Input-Output machine concept introduced in the second lesson. Frequently the students need a combination of operations (usually Multiply and Add) to make a working rule. Students have received modeling on the trial and error/guess and check style of rule finding. We try to test operation and number combinations in a sequence rather than randomly to eliminate possibilities. Students can always count down a long chart to find future outcomes, but computation errors seem to creep in after ten or twelve operations.

Week of October 21 - 25, 2013
Thursday HW
1. Test packs back on Monday, October 28, with corrections and a parent signature on the top of the first page. See yesterday's blog note for more detail.
2. The final Unit 2 Math test is on Monday, October 28, first thing in the morning. Students should review the types of problems they had on the quizzes and also review the types of instructions and questions we used in the text and the MMS booklet. As always, they show use a long division format when asked to divide.
3. Our class will have a visit in our Library with Ms. Irene Atkinson, our school trustee, on Friday morning. She will talk to the students about her work in this area of local governance. There should be some useful crossover with our citizenship study in Social Studies. I asked the boys and girls to think of questions they might ask her.
4. MMS pages 2 and 3. We've introduced patterns for 2 days now. The main types are growing, shrinking and repeating (also called alternating). The vocabulary for the unit is very important. We describe the numbers, letters or shapes in the patterns as "terms". Repeating patterns have a "core" that "alternates". Pattern rules are written with a familiar, repeated style as shown at the top of page 2 in the MMS duo-tang ("Start at... each time.") The code for a pattern is usually cracked by subtracting the first term from the second and finding the difference. Doing this three times (2nd minus 1st, 3rd minus 2nd, 4th minus 3rd) usually reveals the operations at play. We modeled at least eight examples of this as a class yesterday and today. Students with questions should ask them. I know I am checking for understanding regularly in large groups and individually but it is a big class and I may miss someone's confusion.
5. Spelling Dictation #4 is tomorrow afternoon. Students should remember to bring their books back to school for the test. If a student is absent I expect him/her to make it up the next school day.
6. Pizza day tomorrow.
Wednesday HW
1. Test packs were returned today. I would like them back on Monday, October 28, with corrections and a parent signature on the top of the first page. The package contains three dictations, three problems of the week, four Math quizzes and a CASI evaluation. I tried to supply a generous amount of feedback on most of the pieces. In Math I notice that the students are reluctant to estimate and that multiplication (times tables and by two digit factors) continues to be a challenge for some students. This was a much longer period (5-6 weeks) than I usually spend on a single Math unit. We have to move on to Patterning, which I introduced today.

Tuesday HW
1. Spelling text page 21 #1; page 22 # 4,5,6,7; page 23 #1.
Monday HW
1. MMS pages 34-35. If division is required, used the long division format. Recall that word problems should be answered with a sentence that uses words from the original question.
2. Spelling Cycle #4 activities.
3. Photo retakes on November 5.

Week of October 15 - 18, 2013
Friday HW
1. Problem of the week (It's All In The Game) is due on Monday.
(It's All in the Game: Four years ago, the Kimura family's DX3 gaming system cost $320. Now it's
worth $140. If the system depreciates (decreases in value) by the same amount each year, how much will it be worth when they plan to sell it, two years from now?)
2. Long Division and Multiplication quiz on Monday.
3. Spelling dictation # 3 on Monday.
4. Photo retakes are on November 5.
There was some concern expressed over the instructions for the MMS homework on pages 32 and 33. The short division model was requested in these instructions and I neglected to inform students that they should rewrite the problems to use the Long Division place value style we've been practicing. Sorry about that.
Although I know there are several division techniques, I tend to show the students only the multiples of ten technique and the the standard, place value-based DMSB algorithm. Inevitably the students opt for the latter style. Short division, which is very useful for some students, is not a style I encourage through modeling since there are more complex pencil-paper calculations coming next year with two digit divisors. Short division will be a tough technique to use in that context, so I choose to model long division almost exclusively.
I would expect students to present their quiz and test answers in the long division and multiplication styles we've been using in class in our modeled demonstrations.
Thursday HW
1. Summer reverie anecdote in Writing notebooks. We introduced it yesterday and reviewed it again today. Student had the opportunity to make a mind web of possible topics and then of best vocabulary in a guided format. I want students to complete at least 15 lines of a rough draft tonight. We are following regular organization of text conventions (lined up along the margin, using indentations, writing on each line, adding a personal title) and trying to develop our audience awareness while telling a meaningful story of an event that students witnessed or participated in over the summer. It should be a significant event but not necessarily 'life-changing'. It should be something a student is willing to share (happy or otherwise) rather than a private story.
2. Long Division and Multiplication quiz on Monday.
3. Spelling dictation # 3 on Monday.
4. Photo retakes are on November 5.
5. Parent Donation letters.
6. Flu Shot letter went home today.
We will have our final Terry Fox fundraising award tomorrow. The afternoon periods only will be for electronic use if students are caught up with their homework. No movies or saved videos please. As well, it will be an all-day pyjama day should students wish to wear them. Thank you once again for your excellent fundraising efforts.
I wanted to also thank my class for their great behaviour during yesterday's tree plaque ceremony for Alex Shapiro. They were terrific! Here is a tweet from the Toronto Star's reporter, Kristin Rushowy:

1. MMS pages 30-31. Students are struggling with the idea of estimating in long division. Estimation is a useful skill both in adult life and to check now if answers are reasonable when precise calculations are done. We continue to reinforce the importance of times table control while building on earlier exposure to concepts such as rounding, compensation and multiplying by multiples of 10

Week of October 7 - 10, 2013
Wednesday HW
1. Complete the six long division questions we used for practice on the whiteboard today. This is the start of our long division arc. There will again be an emphasis on estimation as a tool to self-check the calculation. I am encouraging use of the standard algorithm (Divide/Multiply/Subtract/ Bring Down with place value) to divide, but I also showed the students another technique using multiples of 10 which is outlined in the textbook.
This is only the first lesson in a planned series of at least four days so some difficulty with the concept is to be expected. Times table command is an area on which to work. We practice in class, but some home practice is a must, even if it is not assigned homework.
2. Parent Council fundraising request letters were sent home today. I have made good use of all our parent council funding over the years, most recently for the four iPads we use. Thank you for your past support of this initiative.
3. Photo Orders are due October 17. Proofs were sent home today. No retake date has been posted yet by our school.
4. Problem of the Week (Angry Nerds App) is due on Tuesday October 15.
Tuesday HW
Today was an unusual day in that 13 students were absent for XC running for the bulk of the day. We used the time to catch up and do extra practice but also introduced two new activities. Cross Country runners need to catch up but will have an extra day to do so.
1. Journal: The Backpack. Students should write a page entry in their journals on the prompt shared in class. Special focus should be on indentation of paragraphs, proper capitalization and application of previous editing I've done in the journal especially with respect to sight words.
The prompt: "There is an emergency. You have 20 minutes to gather at least three important items that can fit in a backpack before you leave your home. You may not be able to ever come back. Name the three or more items you chose to take and give reasons for your choices." The focus is on choosing special items that are irreplaceable and on the reasoning for each one. No laundry lists should be composed ('my Superman action figure, my Batman action figure, my Iron Man action figure...') if students want to create a good journal that others would like to read.
2. Multiplication by two digit factor practice. We had 16 extra practice questions today on the whiteboard. The XC boys in class, who left later, had time to see them all. The girl XC runners might have run out of time and should catch up with the extra day.
Monday HW
1. Spelling text book activities on page 17-19. The students should have copied it down correctly from the whiteboard today. Some students received a shorter assignment.
2. A new problem of the Week was handed out today. I wrote each student's name on it and handed it to them personally. It is called "Angry Nerds App" and is due on Tuesday October 15 due to the holiday Monday. When I collected the previous Problem only three students did not have it ready. They stayed in at AM recess to work on a new one.
3. Our class total for Terry Fox was $418.80. Bravo! Our school total was over $13 450.00, which is a new record by a considerable margin. Thank you Runnymede!

Week of September 30 - October 4, 2013
Thursday HW
1. Problem of the week is due on Monday, October 7. The work for it is completed on the reverse side of the page. I distributed this page on Monday September 30 to all students and wrote their names on each page when all were present in class -- everyone received one. We checked again today to make sure everyone still had a copy. They will receive a new problem on Mondays most weeks.

We also have an online donation option at www.terryfox.org/SchoolRun/ . Choose "Donate to a Student" and search for "Runnymede" in Ontario. The site finds "Runnymede and Sr PS" which is a typo the Foundation has said they will fix for us. Tax receipts are available if your information is filled out fully on the pledge forms. The reflection portion should be a personal opinion and a connection of one or more of the three types of connections (to text, to self, to world). See below for sentence starters.

Thursday HW
I did not assign any homework tonight because it was Curriculum Night. My presentation will start at 7:00 PM in room 365. We will discuss the year's program in general terms and go over routines and additional trips and class events that are planned.
Many students have brought in a book for silent reading. Bravo! Please ensure that you've selected a chapter book you enjoy so that your child has some self-selected reading available each day in class.
Wednesday HW
1. MMS pages 14 and 15.
2. Queen's Park trip volunteers for September 25, 11-2:30.
3. Please have a book to read for silent reading in class and to prepare for our Book Report, which is to be announced.
4. Paper towel and tissue for class use.
Tuesday HW
1. MMS pages 12 and 13. we will play the game in class at some point.

3. Queen's Park volunteers needed: September 25, 11-2:30.
4. Roll of paper towel, box of Kleenex, please and thanks.
Sorry for the delay in posting the to blog. Yesterday was a bit unusual. There was a photographer and reporter from the Toronto Star in our class for an hour or so. They were working on a short profile of me for a teaching award I was selected to receive. The class was calm, cool and collected despite the disruption, no easy feat during yesterday's heat.
Monday HW
1. Math Makes Sense (MMS) navy blue duotang pages 10-11. This is the primary, but not only, form of homework I assign for the year.
2. Bring a chapter book of your choosing to class for silent reading and book reports. It must be at least 90 pages long, mostly text.
3. We have a field trip to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Queen's Park) on September 25. Permission forms are coming. The fee is very low -- likely just TTC. I will require at least 3 parent volunteers to make this trip. The visit last from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. More details are on my web page (areynolds.org). Please let me know through your child if you can attend as a volunteer.
4. One roll of paper towel and one box of Kleenex tissue requested for class use please. Thank you to those who have already brought some in.

Welcome to the 2013-2014 School Year!
Week of September 3-6, 2013
Greetings to the new students in my class for 2013-14. I'm looking forward to meeting and getting to know all of you during this first week. We will jump right in to the school year with some ice breaker activities and some Math and Language reviews. As the first week goes by we will be preparing for the first Math unit in Number Sense and the first Language activities with News Journals and a novel study. Also upcoming are our preparations for field trips to the Ontario Legislature and Warren Park See you soon!
This blog will function as a weekly homework listing and be archived as the week ends. Be sure to check out my class web page at http://areynolds.org/ all year long. Plenty of useful stuff is posted, including downloads of class handouts which you should use to replace lost work.
At the bottom of this blog page is a calendar for the year. I have updated it for September and am working on finishing the rest of the year. I also use the calendar to make note of tests, field trips and other school events. I urge you to subscribe to the blog posts to receive daily updates of your's child's activity. I do make time each day for agenda writing by the student's and you should ask to see that book on a daily basis, but this page is a useful complement to that routine.
Friday HW
1. One roll of paper towel and one box of Kleenex tissue requested for class use please. Thank you to those who have already brought some in. Doing so frees up budget money that I can spend on other big ticket items for the class.
On Fridays and holidays I assign no formal homework, with rare exceptions. Without EQAO in the background these exceptions will likely be even rarer. I would encourage parents to have their students read regularly for a set time over the weekend -- 25 minutes is a good number.
We had a very good introductory week. The students in our class are bubbly and friendly. We are working on improving our work habits and productivity but the boys and girls have a pleasant friendly outlook so far. Thank you for sending them to school in such good spirits!
Only a few students have forms that are yet to be handed in. I would appreciate your efforts to send them all in by Monday if you haven't yet so that I can turn my attention to OSR reading and other planning. Have a good weekend!
Thursday HW
1. We worked on Number Sense #4 for 35 minutes in class today. It was completed by almost all students. I checked agendas and each student was bringing home the four pages to use as a study guide for the quiz.

4. Bring a photo of yourself to cut up.

Week of April 15-19, 2013
This has been a very tough week for the students in room 365. With the help of parents and staff at school we've taken some important steps in coming to terms with the loss of Alex. Your sons and daughters have done incredible things this week amidst tragic circumstances. Our grief was hard to manage. The greatest help came from those experiencing the most pain of all -- Alex's family. I want to thank Alex's Mom and Dad and Brother for their incredible generosity of spirit and concern for our students. I'm awed by their dignity and strength.
This week we've read a number of books, had two visits from professional staff, welcomed two parents to class to speak with the students and conducted some structured talks about the grieving process. We had a moving visit to Alex's home on Thursday that was very special. I tried to stress that there was no timetable for mourning, there was no right way to do it, and that it would take time beyond this week to be fully felt. I also wanted to acknowledge that the students have to still be kids and be allowed to be happy and have fun. This is a difficult balance to achieve but I'm working at it. I am very grateful for the supportive feedback I've received so far. Please let me know if you feel I'm overlooking important things.
Next week we'll attempt to return to a more familiar school day after some baby steps today and tomorrow. We'll have a Math Unit test on Monday and some journal work due the same day. I've submitted the deposit to Camp Wahanowin and I will inform you of the amount of the remaining balance. Soccer tryouts for the girls team I'm coaching will start the week after that.
But we'll still remember and talk about our dear friend.
Here are a few of the movies we made before and after April 12. The students were inspired to work hard and with a genuine determination. I was very proud of their efforts.

Thursday HW
There is no homework for this long weekend, but a few reminders and updates may be useful.
1. On Wednesday I handed out the field trip forms for our end of the year trip to Camp Wahanowin. With apologies, the turnaround time for the initial deposit is somewhat shorter than I'd like. I appreciate your efforts and good will to help us meet these dates. We had a lengthy discussion yesterday with the class about the particulars of the camp and its facilities. We'll watch a video in the coming weeks as well so provide the students with more information.
2. I collected a fair number of Problems of the Week today. There are still eleven assignments outstanding.
3. The cereal box is due in finished form next Thursday. We've spent six class periods introducing and working on the activity to date.
4. Thank you to parents and students for their support of the Parent Council's Spring Thaw activity through activity supervision and cake making. The delivery date for cakes is April 2. the supervision times on April 3 are 3-4:45; 4:45 to 6:30; and 6:30 to 8.
5. The test packs I handed out last week were due today. I will check again for the seven that were not returned today on Tuesday.

1. Unit 10 Math Test on Tuesday March 26. The last quiz had a class average of 87 %, which is very high. The in-class activity scores were somewhat lower but still in the B range. Homework in the unit was generally strong but siome students did not complete half or more of the four practice activities. Students should prepare for the test by studying the "Quick Review" sections of the homework book, reviewing special vocabulary in bold print in both the homework book and the text, and can use the "Show What You Know" question in the text on pages 402-403 for practice.
2. Test Packs were handed out today. They are due back in class with corrections and a parent signature by next Thursday.

Proceeds from this event are slated to be donated to our partner school in Moshono, Tanzania. Students are asked to bring a baked cake to school on Tuesday April 2 as a prize in the cake walks. Most boxed cake mixes are nut-free but special care should be taken in the icing or other toppings added to the cake. Ms. Deschamps has asked that they be nut-free. Many students in 365 were very enthusiastic about the prospect of baking a cake at home.
3. The Parent council also requested grade six support to help supervise the event during one of three shifts. These are 3:00 to 4:45; 4:45 to 6:30 and 6:30 to 8:00. 3. Math Quiz on Wednesday March 6: Capacity and Volume / Relating Units of Mass
We started a new math unit today on Patterning. It is very brief and will be completed within the week before the Break. The unit recalls vocabulary from the earlier Patterning unit we did (growing, shrinking, alternating and recursive patterns; terms, input/output machines, and rule statements) as well as graphing skills we recently studied (origin points, ordered pairs, labels and titles, interval and scale choices, and ruler use). The primary area of difficulty in the early going is recalling how to determine a patterning rule. I found that was rather fuzzy in the students's minds.
As we gear up for our electricity unit, here is an oddity for Music on a Monday:
1. Have a terrific, safe and healthy holiday! See you after the break. Don't forget to turn clocks ahead an hour this weekend.
2. Math notes:
- We finished up with Unit 10 in class today. We will have a unit test sometime during the week we return from March Break.
- We start a new unit at that time on Transformational Geometry (flips, slides and turns) with a Math workshop from the University of Waterloo's math department.
- The final Measurement assessment (volume and capacity, relating units of measure) had a class average of just over 75%.
Thursday HW
1. MMS pages 154-55.
We made many connections to real world driving situations in our distance, time and average speed lesson today. The students seemed very knowledgeable about those types of circumstances and applied them well to the math topic.
2. Math Quiz on Unit 10, Lessons 1 and 2 tomorrow.
1. MMS HW book pages 152-53.
2. Math Quiz on Unit 10, Lessons 1 and 2 on Friday March 8.
The quiz on Monday March 4 (Volume) had an average of 83% and the previous one (on Money and Surface Area) had an average of 74%. Great work boys and girls!

2. Social Studies booklet page 1

Week of February 19 - 22, 2013
Thursday HW
1. MMS pages 86-87. This work on surface area likely requires additional rough work pages to complete correctly. The booklet doesn't leave enough space. We completed four modelled questions today together. A major point for students to remember is drawing diagrams of both the 3D solid and the 2D net for the solid. That usually helps them a great deal.
2. Creation Myth good copy is due on Monday with 8 coloured cartoon panels and accomapanying captions that tell the story of the poem we read.
3. Book Report reading is ongoing.
*** We need just one more cereal box for a class set.
Wednesday HW
1. Cereal box collection is ongoing. We have 21 boxes for 24 students.
We introduced Surface Area today in Math class but did not progress to the point where I could assign homework.
We've been making use of the laptops a fair bit in recent weeks. Here is an interesting video about music and computers. The HAL 9000 computer also sang this number in 2001. It has a nice retro chiptune feel to it.
Tuesday HW
1. Math quiz on money tomorrow.
There was no homwork on Tuesday.

Monday HW
1. Book Report Due on February 7
2. Math Quiz Unit 4 Lessons 8 and 9 on Wednesday, February 6.
3. Constellation Story Planner shown for checking tomorrow. We worked on this in class for more than 50 minutes today as I circulated to take questions and provide feedback. We formed success criteria for a good story together in class today to help fill in this graphic organizer.
4. MMS pages 64-65. Zero in the quotient is an area to be mindful of. I also stressed the use of estimation to help check answers for reasonableness.
5. Math problem of the week due on Friday (No Business Like Snow Business). I expect the students to provide a more detailed Answer-Prove-Extend/Explain solution on the reverse side. It should be readable and include number work and sentences. We've modelled this style several times in class, most recently today during math class.
Here is some lunar lightheartedness from 1972 for our Music on a Monday. There is a substantial minority of our class that believes the lunar missions are elaborate hoaxes. I'll keep trying to persuade them otherwise.

3. Next book report is due on February 7. You should select a book if you haven't already.
It was quite cold today. I reminded students that they should consider dressing for the weather indoors as well as outdoors during the winter months. A light t-shirt will be of small comfort if we are lacking heat in class (as sometimes happens at Runnymede) or if there was a real emergency (e.g., a fire drill) that required speedy evacuation. Long sleeves, a vest, a fleecy top or a hoodie that can be unzipped to cool off are examples of what I recommend.

Wednesday HW
1. Book Report due by January 18.
2. I have 20 of the 23 Biodiversity stories submitted. These are due by Friday as well.

2. Biodiversity story due by Friday. The majority of printed stories (18 out 23) were submitted today in typed form. Ask your child if he/she still needs to submit his/hers.
We had a Library book exchange today. Most Country research books are already in my class for in-class borrowing. If your son/daughter wishes to he/she may want to visit a public library for materials to supplement the online and printed resources I provide.
In relation to the Country Profile research activity we also had a discussion about plagiarism today that focussed on the requirement to acknowledge sources and avoid copying or close paraphrasing.
