Friday HW
Happy Halloween! The students brought many treats today and we enjoyed a good afternoon. They were quite calm and showed good manners during the snack time. The costumes were terrific! I hope everyone has a safe evening.
1. I handed out a test pack composed mainly of Math assessments today. Please review my note on the top of the package. The return date is next Thursday, November 6, with a parent signature. (No HSP students received a test pack today.)
Thursday HW
1. Party snacks, movie and Halloween parade on Friday. Students were discouraged from bring bottles of soda pop so that spills could be prevented. There are no food allergies that require the use of an epi-pen in our class, but I would still appreciate some care in avoiding treats with those ingredients if possible.
Wednesday HW
1. Math Patterning quiz on Unit 1, Lessons 1 and 2 tomorrow. Study the Quick Review sections of the MMS duotang and the Connect sections of the text in the relevant lessons for review.

2. Journal -- one page on this prompt: "Write about a time when you felt uncomfortable about sticking out." The topic is based on our class read-aloud "Wonder". Students should pay attention to the sticker guidelines on the inside cover of the journal, as well as any previous correction I made on the first journal.

Our first homework club was not well attended today, in part due to the announcement of it only last Friday. I will continue to have them every Monday. Exceptions would be on days when I am absent due to illness (which would be last moment notice, unfortunately) and on holiday Mondays. On rare occasions there are school meetings on Mondays.

Friday
1. My homework club begins on Mondays after school starting on October 27, now that Slow Pitch season is over. Students should ensure that their parents and RAC know they are staying and that they leave in a timely manner while the crossing guard is still present and on duty.

1. Select a new book for your book report for next Monday. The report is not due on Monday. You should have the book in class to read on Monday.
2. Locate one website that discusses the risks of smoking. Make five notes about what you read on a piece of paper. Things to look for include health risks, money costs and influences to avoid smoking.

1. Scholastic orders due Monday. No cash please.
2. Choose a six letter word for your password for school computers on the TDSB network. An example of a six letter word: "canuck", "fluffy", or "monkey". You should choose a unique word that isn't one of these, and not tell your friends your password.
Thursday HW
1. Quiz on multiplication and division on Friday, October 17. I handed out a practice sheet to each student who was present personally today. Please use it to help study. You may want to do a portion of it each night. Return it in whatever state it is in on the morning of the quiz.

3. Photo Day is next Friday October 24.
4. A schedule for the five day cycle was handed out today.

Tuesday HW
1. MMS HW book page 33. I have a practice sheet to send home for multiplication and division tomorrow.
2. Quiz on multiplication and division on Friday October 17.
3. Book Report due on Thursday October 16. Please bring it it in on the due date rather than earlier. Thank you.
4. Tomorrow is a Library Period day in the afternoon. Please return your books to exchange them for new ones. This is a good opportunity to select a chapter book for DEAR time reading or your next book report. Too often students have no book to read and we have to select one from my class library instead. Comic books and graphic novels aren't a good substitute in every such case for reading improvement. I am encouraging students to select personal interest books that present more of a challenge.

Week of October 6 - 10, 2014
Thursday HW
1. MMS Lesson 12 page 32 only. We modeled five long division questions on the white board today that showed a progression of difficulty. We also took some time to practice division estimation before we started. I am skipping that lesson (#11), for the most part, in the text although we may do some elements of it.
2. "Honesty" news journal -- summary only.
3. Book Report is due on Thursday October 16.
Wednesday HW
1. News Journal on Piper the goose chasing border collie -- complete the summary and the opinion. Notes about how to do it are on the inside cover of the notebook. We spent 20 minutes working on it today after a 40 minute introduction to the article and the assignment.
2. MMS page 28 only. we started this in class today.
3. Book Report is due on Thursday October 16. Please bring it in on that day instead of earlier.
Tuesday HW
Today was a no homework day as part of our Terry Fox fundraising rewards.
Monday HW
1. Get the Book Report package signed by a parent and returned to class tomorrow.
2. Select a book report style from the list of 24 possibilities. It was handed out today and we reviewed samples of almost every type. The due date is Thursday, October 16. We have had book report reading time almost daily for the last three weeks and I have asked that reading be done nightly. Most students should be finished reading their chosen novels. If your child did not bring it home, the package is downloadable/viewable here:
http://areynolds.org/index_files/Page879.htm
Remember that it is a response to literature, not a summary. The expected length is about one page.
3. MMS Lesson 9, pages 26-27.
