Week of March 31 - April 4, 2014

Friday HW
1.  Story of Stuff research and note-taking is ongoing.
2.  Book report novel is due in class for daily reading.  Several students had no book today.  The actual report is due in May, but time has a way of passing quickly when preparation slides....
3.  Library period will be on Monday afternoon.  The Spring Thaw caused some shifting of times.
4.  Math Quiz on Unit 8, Lessons 5, 6, and 7 next Wednesday.  A good problem to practice would be page 279, # 10 in the textbook and page 115, #2 in the MMS book.

Thursday HW
1.  Story of Stuff research and note-taking is ongoing.
2.  Book report novel is due in class for me to look at tomorrow.  The actual report is due in May.

Week of March 24 - 28, 2014

Thursday HW
1.  MMS pages 112-113 on Lesson 5.  Yesterday's quiz was done very well, based on my marking of page one.
2.  Unit 8, lessons three and four Math Quiz on Tuesday, April 1 (sorry, that's no April Fool...).
3.  Continue gathering research for your "Story of Stuff" project.  I am looking at a due date of April 8.  I do move the due dates at times if unforeseen circumstances arise, but it won't be earlier than that.
A good starting point for is the show page for "How It's Made" on the discovery.ca website.  The Story of Stuff video is easily available online on YouTube if you want a refresher on our introduction to the topic.  This site however doesn't really deal with two of the three main components:  extraction and environmental impact.
4.  Scholastic orders are due in class on Monday.

Wednesday HW
1.  Trickster Tale is due in good copy form on Thursday by 3:15 PM.  Students must hand in the story organizer/planner with it.
2.  Continue gathering research for your "Story of Stuff" project.  We spent another period yesterday for a total of three using laptops to do preliminary research for the organizer in the Science booklet.  At this point much of the assignment will be completed at home, by contrast with the Human Organ Systems assignment, for which I scheduled many in-class periods that were not always used well.  I am looking at a due date of April 8.  I do move the due dates at times if unforeseen circumstances arise, but it won't be earlier than that.

3.  Trickster Tale is due in good copy form on Thursday by 3:15 PM.  Students must hand in the story organizer/planner with it.
4.  Continue gathering research for your "Story of Stuff" project.  We spent a period yesterday and today using laptops to do some preliminary looking online.  We will have one more period for that tomorrow.  A good starting point is the show page for "How It's Made" on the discovery.ca website.  The Story of Stuff video is easily available online on YouTube if you want a refresher on our introduction to the topic.

March 17 - 21, 2014

Friday HW
1.  Get your "Story of Stuff" project topic sheet signed over the weekend for Science.  Remember to have your booklet back in class on Monday.
2.  There is a Unit 8 Number Sense quiz on lessons one and two on Wednesday, March 26.

Thursday HW
There is no homework tonight.

Wednesday HW
1.  MMS Lesson 2, pages 106-07 on Fractions and Mixed Numbers.
2.  Bring Library books for tomorrow's Library book exchange period.

Tuesday HW
1.  There is no homework today.  We had nine students away again.  I am trying to slow the pace somewhat to ensure catch-up is not so onerous.

Please bring Library books back starting tomorrow, in advance of our Wednesday Library period.  The circulation system is running properly again and there will be a backlog if books arrive "just in time" for book exchange.  A day earlier would be better.

For those students who are absent, we introduced the use of Cuisenaire rods for fraction manipulation today, but did not complete lesson 2.  We spent two other periods on our Trickster Tale writing and a further one period following up the tail end of Monday's Science lesson and introducing the second Science lesson.

Monday HW
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
1.  We started a new unit in Fractions today with a double period introduction.  Students exchanged their old MMS homework duo-tangs for new ones for Unit 8.  Tonight's homework is Lesson 1 on Equivalent fractions, pages 104-105.

A number of students were absent today.  I will provide some in-class time at recess for catch-up but that isn't really going to be enough to replicate five class periods.  Students can come to homework club on Monday nights to catch up or make plans to read the material and do these practice activities at home:

  • We covered the equivalent fractions material in the hard cover text on pages 258-260 today in Math.
  • In our Changes in Matter unit we performed the experiments as class demonstrations on pages 4 to 6 of the textbook.
  • We also spent a period working on our Trickster Tale rough drafts, with a focus on counting sentences in each paragraph (five is the minimum), and identifying topic and concluding sentences.
  • In our Social Studies work we answered question on the Thornton and Lucie Blackburn reading for "Flight to Freedom" and we read "Capture and Rescue" aloud.

Week of March 3 - 6, 2014

Reminder:  There is no school on Friday due to an unpaid day for staff.

Tuesday HW
1.  Trickster tale planner sheet should be complete and returned to school tomorrow.  We had 45 minutes in class today to work on composing it.  10 students have still not gotten it signed by a parent.
2.  Geometry quiz tomorrow on Unit 7, lessons 3 and 4.  Today's quiz went fairly well, however I noticed students were reluctant to use skills practiced in class -- specifically the use of tracing paper to test the stated transformations they wrote about and the use of special vocabulary highlighted in the unit study sheet they each received..
3.  Spirit Day -- Beach!! -- on Thursday March 6.
4.  "Carnivale" is also on Thursday March 6.  It is an outdoor event. Students should dress accordingly that day, especially in view of the Beach wear they may have in the morning.

Monday HW
1.  Parent signature on Trickster Tale topic sheet/organizer was requested last week to ensure parents are aware of this upcoming in-class writing assignment.  Only 12 of 25 students returned it with a signature today.  I won't be checking tomorrow, but it is still expected.
2.  Sign and correct measurement test package for tomorrow.
3.  Transformation Geometry quizzes that are upcoming:
a) Unit 7, Lessons 1 and 2 (coordinate systems and transformations) tomorrow.
b) Unit 7, Lessons 3 and 4 (congruent figures and lines of symmetry) on Wednesday, March 5.
If your student is absent due to an early holiday, these are the lessons that should be completed in time for quizzes an day after he or she returns to school.
4.  We've been crafting a response to the Lego letter in class for some time.  Today was our final in-class opportunity to finish a proper good copy in 6 paragraphs.  It is due tomorrow in class.
